6D
6D was the first brand to build a helmet around one question: how do you protect the brain from twisting forces, not just straight hits. The answer was ODS, a suspension system inside the helmet. At Helmetheaven you will find the 6D ATR-3, the newest version of that idea.
How 6D began
6D was set up in 2011 in California by motorcycle industry people who thought helmet safety had stood still for too long. In 2013 they released their first helmet, the ATR-1, with a system called Omni-Directional Suspension. It was the first helmet built specifically to deal with rotational impacts, the kind that twist the head in a crash.
The idea drew attention fast. In 2017 6D and its lab partner Dynamic Research won the grand prize in the NFL's Head Health Challenge, a contest to find better protection against brain injury. That result backed up what 6D had claimed from the start.
Since then the ATR line has gone through three generations. The ATR-1 used 27 dampers, the ATR-2 used 11, and the current ATR-3 does the same job with six redesigned ones. Bob Weber, 6D's co-founder, still runs the company.
What sets 6D apart
Most helmets have one layer of foam. 6D uses two, with rubber dampers suspended between them. That inner layer can move a little in any direction, which soaks up twisting forces before they reach your head. It is the core of every 6D helmet.
ODS: Omni-Directional Suspension
Two EPS layers with rubber dampers in between. The inner liner floats slightly and moves in any direction, absorbing rotational forces that a single foam layer cannot.
Rotational protection first
6D was the first brand to design a helmet specifically around rotational impact, the twisting motion that does the most damage to the brain in a crash.
Rebuildable after a crash
If the shell survives, 6D can inspect and replace the inner liner instead of writing off the whole helmet. That is unusual in the helmet world.
Proven in the lab
6D and lab partner Dynamic Research won the grand prize in the NFL's Head Health Challenge in 2017, independent recognition of the ODS design.
The 6D helmet range
At Helmetheaven you will find the current 6D cross helmet:
- ATR-3 - the third generation, with a redesigned ODS system and better ventilation than earlier models. Available in a composite shell and a lighter carbon version.
- FIM homologation - several ATR-3 colourways are FIM homologated, which matters if you race at a level where that is required.
Frequently asked questions about 6D
What is ODS in a 6D helmet?
ODS stands for Omni-Directional Suspension. It is a system of two EPS foam layers with rubber dampers in between. The inner layer can move slightly in any direction, which absorbs rotational forces before they reach the head.
When was 6D founded?
6D was founded in 2011 in California and released its first helmet, the ATR-1, in 2013. It was the first helmet brand to design specifically around rotational impact protection.
Can a 6D helmet be rebuilt after a crash?
Yes. If the shell passes inspection, 6D can replace the inner EPS liner rather than writing off the whole helmet. Always have a helmet inspected after any crash before riding in it again.
Is the 6D ATR-3 FIM homologated?
Several ATR-3 colourways carry FIM homologation. Check the individual product page to see whether that specific version is homologated.
Do 6D helmets meet the European standard?
Yes. The 6D helmets that Helmetheaven sells meet the European ECE 22-06 standard and are suitable for off-road and track use within Europe.
